Each session is curated to cultivate a meditative and flowing experience that encourages the listener to go inward and on a journey.

The experience is enhanced by the calming space and a menu of nutritious and delicious vegetarian food and drinks in a collaboration with Momo Wholefood Cafe.

Who plays?

Momo Piano Sessions is hosted and curated by Australian composer and pianist Emily Mirla Harrison in collaboration with Momo Wholefood Cafe.

Mirla is joined by an exciting line-up of Australian talent whose work pushes classical piano into different creative directions yet retains at its core, the qualities of introversion and melody.

Format

Playing original compositions or interpretations of favourite works from leading Neoclassical Artists, each session is 25 minutes.

There are two intervals to eat a bespoke menu, enjoy a drink and connect with friends and family.

Roots

By hosting affordable, inclusive and welcoming classical music events, new and more diverse audiences are encouraged to discover classical piano and the nascent Neoclassical scene.

These sessions give Australia’s emerging Artists a showcase for their work, helping to inspire them to create, perform and grow.

An inaugural Momo Piano Sessions was held on Piano Day 2022. Over 70 events took place in cities around the world. Momo Piano Session on Piano Day is Newcastle’s first contribution to this annual event.

“Why does the world need a Piano Day? For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener.” – Nils Frahm

Mirla, with special guests No-kë (Sydney) and Newcastle son Hunter Brown, performed their original, melodic, immersive compositions, alongside versions of music by popular Neoclassical artists like Ólafur Arnalds, Joep Beving, Ludovico Einaudi and Slow Meadow.

It was a FREE event or option to ‘Pay What You Feel’ ticket to support the performing Artists.

The sold-out event raised $700 of Donations for Hush Foundation – a wonderful charity that transforms the culture of healthcare through music and the arts.

Piano Day celebrates everyone involved in playing, making, moving and tuning pianos. In the spirit of Piano Day Newcastle’s Glassfront Project provided a special custom-made Kwai.
